| Vice Chancellor Kurt Dirks of WUSTL met with the delegation from Taiwan |
Since 2012, the Ministry of Education (MOE), Taiwan and the State of Missouri have long enjoyed close collaboration. Accompanied by Dr. Tuan-Hua David Ho of Academia Sinica, Andrea Yang, Director of the Education Division of Taipei Economic and Cultural Office (TECO) in Houston, visited Chancellor Emeritus Mark Wrighton and Vice Chancellor Kurt Dirks, International Affairs of Washington University in St. Louis (WUSTL). Chancellor Emeritus Wrighton served as its chief executive officer for 24 years and made significant progress in student quality, campus improvements and international reputation. As a Consultant of International Affairs of WUSTL, he promised to further strengthen collaboration with Taiwan Higher Education Institutions.
Vice Chancellor Dirks reiterated his appreciation toward MOE’s Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signing with WUSTL regarding the Taiwan and Washington University in St. Louis Scholarship. So far, 35 students have been awarded to pursue their studies in biomedical, economic, engineer, social work, law, and education. Through the McDonnell International Scholars Academy, WUSTL provides a helpful network and partnerships for PHD students and leads groundbreaking research projects to prepare Scholars as effective leaders in the global community.
Another ongoing project is the Taiwan Studies in WUSTL lead by Associate Professor Lingchei Letty Chen, Head of the Chinese Section of East Asian Languages and Cultures. The collaborative Taiwan Studies program between MOE and WUSTL is in the third of a three-year project which performs Chinese plays created by Taiwan contemporary artists with the Department of Performing Arts.
MOE also recommended teaching assistants from Taiwan to take charge of the Huayu courses in St. Louis Language Immersion School. A teaching assistant joined the school in August 2019 and is delighted with school activities and the hospitality of the host family while the Language Immersion School welcomes teachers and teaching assistants from Taiwan to lead enriched courses of Mandarin.
