To enhance the relationship between the City of Houston, Houston Police Department (HPD), the State of Texas, and Taiwan, and to further strengthen the interaction between HPD and the overseas community in Houston, better protect Taiwan students and tourist safety, the Education Division of Taipei Economic and Cultural Office (TECO) in Houston promotes Mandarin language training for federal, state, government agency and local law enforcement officers in the Greater Houston Metropolitan Area. Through a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between HPD and the Ministry of Education (MOE), Taiwan, TECO coordinated with the University of St. Thomas to start a 3-year Mandarin Chinese training program for HPD which offers three Excellence Scholarships.
Senior Police officer Jarett Bryan Arocha, Police Officer Elisabeth Ann Blanton, and Police Officer Alex Cheuk Yui Chan made great progress in the first year session and were awarded the Excellence Scholarships to undertake advance Mandarin Chinese training in Taiwan for one week from October 6 to 12, 2019. Commander Kristine Anthony-Miller of the HPD-Training Division led the Delegation to Taiwan.
In addition to the intensive language training facilitated by the Mandarin Studies and Cultural Center of Ming Chuan University, the HPD officers were invited to attend the National Day Celebration Reception and also visited the Department of International and Cross-Strait Education of MOE, Ministry of Justice, Taipei City Police Department, and Central Police University.
The officers said their trip to Taiwan was unexpected before they chose to study in the Mandarin program. They are very impressed by the energetic community, safe and convenient surroundings, friendly people, delicious international and local cuisine, and undoubtedly the professional and creative Mandarin teaching skills. All made their stay in Taiwan an unforgettable experience and they promised to keep promoting Mandarin learning and Cultural of Taiwan.
